Funding begins July 1 or within thirty days of receiving the disbursement form, institution W-9, and IRB. We prefer to keep to a July/January payment schedule.
Who receives the funding?

Would I be able to transfer institutions after I receive my award?
Yes, awards may be transferred to another institution. At least 30 days prior to the transfer, the following must be received by The Foundation of the ASNR.
Upon approval by The Foundation of the ASNR, the recipient will need to provide an updated disbursement form, institution W-9, and IRB for the new institution. The remaining stipend will be prorated on the unused portion of the grant.
We require a final financial reconciliation from the recipient’s current institution and a Mutual Termination Agreement signed by The Foundation of the ASNR and the recipient’s current institution.
I have received an award from another Society. Am I still eligible for your awards?
Applicants who have held any trainee award from any foundation in the past must declare their previous awards on the application. The applicant is considered ineligible if they are or will concurrently be holding any of previously mentioned grants, while applying to or holding a grant from the Foundation of the ASNR.
I still have unspent funds from my grant. What do I do?
Any portion of the award not utilized must be returned to The Foundation of the ASNR.
Are you required to be an American citizen to apply?
No, there is not a citizenship or permanent residency requirement. You must have strong institutional and mentorship support.
What are the eligibility requirements?
Candidates must be members of ASNR in good standing with an MD, MD PhD, or DO degree and must be board-certified or board-eligible in radiology by either the American Board of Radiology (ABR) or the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RSPSC). A candidate must have completed a residency in Diagnostic Radiology and be enrolled in or have completed an ACGME-approved fellowship in neuroradiology or a fellowship in Pediatric Neuroradiology by the award period. The applicant need not be a junior faculty member, but preference will be given to early-stage investigators or those who have not previously performed funded research in the area relevant to their grant application.
Is it acceptable that I am in my last month of training at the application deadline?
Yes, you can apply for an award while you are still a resident. However, but you need to have completed residency and be enrolled in an ACGME-approved fellowship in neuroradiology by the time the award begins (July 1st).
If I apply and do not receive an award, can I reapply next year?
Yes, we recommend that you review and implement any comments, suggestions, etc. that are included in the reviewer comments that are received.
Does my faculty position have influence in whether I receive an award?
Faculty position does not have influence however the awards have typically focused on junior faculty and assistant professors.
Can there be more than one principal investigator on an award?
Yes, there can be a Co-PI for an award. The need for co-PIs should be included in the application.
Can there be multiple applicants per institution?
Yes, there can be multiple applicants per institution.
Is there a requirement regarding a specific amount of time that must be devoted to this grant?
There is no minimum requirement for the grant. You should indicate an effort reflecting your best estimate of the time that you will spend on the project.
How can I apply?

Yes, justification is required for all budgeted expenses.

Do I need to send my documents all at once? What if I do not have the letters of nomination/collaboration?
Yes, you need to send all documents as part of application.. The only exception is for letters of nomination/collaboration which may be uploaded to asnr.smapply.io separately as additional documents.
Is a cover letter required?
No, a cover letter is not required. However, a cover sheet (included with the application) must accompany the application.
Is it OK for my letter of nomination from the chair to come from a department other than neuroradiology?
Yes, however the letter must be from the department chair to confirm that the application is the candidate endorsed by the institution for the award chosen.
Does my primary mentor need to be a neuroradiologist?

I have applied for The Foundation of the ASNR awards in the past and I received feedback from the reviewers. In which category of the application should I address the feedback?
You should address the feedback in your ten-page research plan.
Does my mentor have to be at the same institution where I will be conducting my research?
We strongly encourage your mentor to be from the same institution where you will be conducting your research. If your mentor is not at your institution, please provide evidence of a strong mentor-mentee relationship.
Are figures/tables counted in the ten-page research plan limit?
Yes, they would count against the ten–page limit.
Are references in addition to the ten-page plan or are they included in the plan?
References are in addition to the ten-page plan and are not included in the page limit.
Is a preliminary data section necessary?
Yes, preliminary studies must be included in the research plan.
Is a signature page or an institutional signing letter required?
No, it is not required.
Who makes the decision about the awards?
Reviewers are selected from member of the ASNR Research Committee.
Are there formatting limitations?
Use a minimum font size of 11 in Arial or Times New Roman font. Margins must be set at 0.5 inches and all sections should be double spaced, except the reference section, which may be single spaced.
Are co-mentors permitted?
Yes, if necessary for research proposal.
Am I required to provide a biographical sketch and documents regarding research support for my co-mentors as well?
Only if mentor will play a specific role in project in addition to serving as a mentor.
Must the mentor be a member of ASNR?
Yes, mentors should be Senior Members of the ASNR in good standing
What is the best way to manage collaborators at other institutions?
We would like separate letters of collaboration that spell out what the collaborator is doing or mentoring in the project. The primary mentor should make this clear in his/her letter.
How should the final progress report be structured?
Progress reports should follow the format of a research manuscript. Reports should also include a list of presentations and publications that resulted from the funding project, as well as any additional funding received to continue the project (or plans for additional funding).
